Plot summary:
While ringing in the new year aboard the cruise ship Poseidon, a giant wave crashes into the ship and flips it upside down. A ragtag group of survivors realize their only chance is to make their way to the deepest bowels of the ship, now at the top, if they are going to have any chance of getting out. It is New Year's Eve, and over 2,000 passengers & crew are ringing in the New Year aboard the huge cruise ship 'Poseidon' on the open sea. At midnight, without warning, a huge wave hundreds of feet high - a rogue wave - slams into the Poseidon and rolls it upside down. Most of the passengers & crew are killed outright, but several hundred remain alive in the ballroom, where the party was being held. Realizing their only hope of rescue lies at the surface of the water - where the ship's hull is now - a handful of survivors, led by Dylan (Lucas) and Robert (Russell) start to make their way past falling debris, flash fires, and the ever-present threat of flooding - to the ship's propeller shafts. Will they succeed - or will they join the hundreds left behind who perished as the ballroom's windows gave way under the water pressure & drowned? On New Year night, Poseidon, the luxurious cruise liner was hit by a majestic rogue wave flipping it upside down. With help several hours away most of the passengers decide to sit it out. However, Dylan Johns (Josh Lucas) decides to get off the already sinking ship, by climbing to the hull (now on top). He is joined by Maggie James (Jacinda Barrett) and her son Conor (Jimmy Bennett), Robert Ramsey (Kurt Russell), his daughter Jennifer (Emmy Rossum) and her boyfriend Christian (Mike Vogel), Elena Gonzalez (Mía Maestro) and Richard Nelson (Richard Dreyfuss). Will they all make it out before the ship sinks?
